4 Quilting Mistakes to Avoid (From a 20-Year Quilting Veteran)

4 Quilting Mistakes to Avoid (From a 20-Year Quilting Veteran)

Quilting seems easy, right? Just follow the pattern and you’re good to go? Well, Erica, the founder of the A Needle N Thread YouTube channel (@aneedlenthread), is here to bust that myth and save you from some common headaches—especially if you’re just starting out.

Here’s what you need to know before your next project:

🚨 A quarter inch seam allowance isn’t optional
Erica learned this the hard way. Quilting patterns love to insist on a “quarter inch seam allowance,” and for good reason. Slipping up here leads to blocks that won’t align, seams that don’t match, and a quilt that just… doesn’t work. Invest in a quarter-inch foot or mark your machine’s bed with tape to get it right every time.

🧯 Pressing isn’t ironing
Pressing = applying heat and weight. Ironing = pushing fabric around. Big difference. Use ironing for big uncut pieces of fabric. Pressing is your go-to when dealing with seams or delicate, cut pieces. Pressing ensures your seams stay flat and the shape stays intact—no bubbles or wonky blocks here.

🌗 Press to the dark side? Not always
The “press to the dark side” rule is nice in theory, but sometimes you’ve got to go rogue. Pressing seams toward the darker fabric is ideal, but it’s not always possible. Sometimes, pressing seams open or toward the lighter fabric works better, especially when you’re aiming for that sleek, flat quilt top.

👥 Find your quilting community
Whether online or in-person, sewing alongside others is a game-changer. Erica admits she’s not a social butterfly, but even she recognizes the power of community. Fellow quilters provide advice, feedback, and support—helping you grow faster in your craft.
