Master the Art of Chain Piecing: A Time-Saving Sewing Technique

Today, we’re excited to share a great tip from Laura over at Sew Very Easy (@SewVeryEasy). In this video, Laura walks us through a fantastic time-saving sewing method called chain piecing. If you’ve never tried it before, chain piecing is an efficient way to sew multiple fabric pieces together without cutting threads between each seam, making it perfect for quilters and anyone working on larger projects.

What is Chain Piecing?

Chain piecing is a technique where you continuously feed fabric pieces through your sewing machine, stitching one seam after another without stopping to cut the thread. This helps you work faster and keep your pieces organized, especially when tackling quilts or projects with multiple blocks.

Laura explains how to get started with chain piecing in her video:

  1. Prepare Your Fabric: Match up your fabric pieces. You can pin them together, but it's not required.
  2. Use a Scrap Starter: Start sewing on a small scrap of fabric to prevent thread tangling.
  3. Feed Fabric Continuously: Once you finish sewing one set of fabric, feed the next set in without cutting the thread.
  4. Leave Space: Make sure to leave a couple of stitches between each fabric set, making it easier to trim the threads later.

Why Chain Piecing is So Effective

As Laura highlights, chain piecing allows you to sew without stopping and starting, saving you time and effort. This method is like sewing one long continuous piece of fabric, and it's ideal for quilters working on blocks or strips. Plus, leaving a small gap between your pieces makes cutting the connecting threads quick and easy.
